About the Better Exchange Thrift Shop:
In the early 1980’s the need for some kind of thrift store in Cooperstown was recognized by Mrs. Arthur (Bunny) Laidlaw. As a board member of the Susquehanna SPCA, she was concerned about the necessity of fund raising to support the important activities of the organization and the limited earning potential of bake sales and sidewalk sales. Thus, Mrs. Laidlaw conceived the idea of the Better Exchange Thrift Store to support the activities of the SSPCA and to serve the community.
After an extensive search for a suitable location, the shop was opened. During the early years, the shop occupied various locations on Main Street ending its downtown tenure in the small house on Chestnut Street presently serving as the Glimmerglass Opera ticket office. The Better Exchange quickly outgrew that location and a building was constructed across the parking lot from the SSPCA shelter where the shop is located today.
The shop is staffed entirely by a crew of over 30 volunteers, some of whom have been with the organization for as long as 20 years. Their dedication and cheerful service are exemplary and very important to the success of the Better Exchange. Please take a minute to thank them when you visit the shop.
The Better Exchange is a vital part of the continued service provided by the SSPCA. It generates almost 40% of the income for the operation of the shelter. The organization is most grateful to the many people who donate used items for sale at the shop and to the shoppers as well. Every cent of income from the shop goes directly to the care and housing of the animals in the shelter.
Accepted Donations:
- Clothing and shoes for adults and children
- Small household appliances
- Small items of furniture (end tables, lamps and occasional chairs for example)
- Housewares
- Linens
- Books (except text books and encyclopedias)
- Toys
- Decorative items
- CD’s, DVD’s and vdeo tapes
When making a donation, please help by making sure everything is in perfect, ‘next to new’ condition. The wonderful volunteers at the Better Exchange spend untold hours going through the donations making sure they are saleable and the trash fees are huge because of the volume of items that have to be discarded because they are not in good enough repair to be put out for sale. Tax deduction forms are available for donations.
Volunteer Opportunities:
The Better Exchange is a wonderful place to volunteer for a great cause. New volunteers are always welcome. There are 2 shifts per day – 10am-1pm and 1pm-4pm - Tuesday through Friday and one shift 10am-2pm on Saturday. The work involves sorting and tagging items for sale, putting them on the floor, cashing out customers and making sure the shop is neat and tidy. Please call Jane at 607-547-8111 if you are interested in becoming part of the Better Exchange team.
