Update 2/3/12
The owner of the Southside Kennels has been charged with 49 counts of animal cruelty and the manager of the facility charged with 7 counts of cruelty. All of the dogs that have been removed are doing well. The animals remaining will continue to be monitored. This case remains in the hands of the law enforcement and the district attorney. We will continue assist them as they need us. We thank you all for your continued overwhelming support during this time.
Update 1/27/12
The SSPCA has been assisting the state police in the removal of several dogs from a local kennel/breeder. Our job in these cases is to provide these animals with a safe environment, rehabilitation and any medical care necessary until the case is resolved. Currently this case is still under investigation by the state police. Any dogs that may remain at the facility at this time are in no immediate danger and will remain monitored. Due to the need to follow procedure, we cannot remove the dogs that are of acceptable weight and do not appear to have any medical issues.
You can help by monetary donations or donations of both Purina One or Pedigree dog food and cleaning supplies. Again, we thank everyone for their overwhelming support and we will continue to do our best in providing the State Police and the District attorney with any assistance they need.

Update 1/23/12
The Susquehanna SPCA would like to thank everyone for there overwhelming support. There are rumors that have gone around (source unknown) that have sparked alot of questions. We can confirm that we are assisting the State police in a situation with a local breeder. We cannot at this time give any details regarding this case due to the ongoing investigation. The investigation is being done by the state police. We will give details when we can. We have been flooded with calls and emails in regards to this situation and apologize if we cannot get back to each individual person at this time. Please be assured we are doing the best that we can and our main concern remains the animals in our care and being able to assist the State Police with any further action. The best way to help at this time is either monetary donations, which can be given via our website Susquehannaspca.org or leave your detailed information with what space you would have available if the need arises. Again, we apologize that we cannot give detailed information regarding this situation (as we don't want to jepordize the investigation) and thankyou so much for all the calls and comments of support.

SAD START to a HAPPY ENDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
On Monday, August 22nd, 2011, was the first known spotting of a Rottweiler at a fishing access area in Schenevus. Different passer-byers would stop when they saw the dog, or when the dog would be standing in the the road (Route 7).
The story is that origianlly the dog had approached someone who had stopped, but only did that one time, and never approached anyone again. The dog would watch as if he/she was trying to identify his owner, but would not come close to anyone and run off in fear. Three days later a very concerned person had contacted us, told us about the dog, how long they know that he/she had been there and that now the dog had quills in his/her face. We had not been aware of the situation for no one had contacted us until then. I went to the location and there the dog was, laying down behind a patch of tall grass on the other side of the creek, watching me. I was so excited to have found him, but had no idea how timid and afraid he was. I crossed the creek and he was long gone by the time I got to the other side. He had escape routes through the woods behind the grassy area he would spend most of his time. It was obvious that we were not going to be able to get near this dog and he had to be hungry and in pain from the quills. I spent hours there that day, for he would appear back to the same area after running off for a while. I called him and tried coaxing him to come to me in any way I could think of.... This was not working, not even a little!
The next day we brought and set a dog sized Have-a-Heart trap with a big piece of steak as the lure. The day came and went and the trap was still empty. At this point we were not giving up, especially with the forcast of Hurricane Irene hitting the area on Sunday. We had 1 more day before then to do our best to get this dog into a safe environment with food and Vet care. The next day, back and forth to the fishing access, checking the trap, sitting and waiting and watching the dog run in the other direction after spotting us, we were prepared to close the trap and bring it to higher ground in case of flooding the next day, then we would resume as soon as the weather would permit. Around 6:30pm on Saturday evening was our last chance before preparing for the storm......we walked to the trap and HE WAS FINALLY IN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We were so excited, the dog not so much. He watched us approaching and growled with leary eyes. He was so hungry, we were able to feed him some of the canned food that we had with us through the trap. About an hour later, we finagled getting the catch pole on him while in the trap and then released him. He was almost immediately super friendly. I think it took him only about 5-10 minutes to realize that we were there to help him not hurt him. What a sweetheart he was, but still so hungry.
Where did this poor dog come from?? He is young, playful and extremely smart! We have wondered if someone may have left him there and being loyal as dogs are, waited for his owner to come back. We hope this isn't something that someone did, but no one has come foward for him after running ads, and no prior calls about someone missing a dog that matches his description.
VALDER is now available for adoption and now has a chance for a loving forever home. You can stop in and meet him at the shelter and he can show you what a great dog he is.
If anyone has any information about this dog and where he may have come from, please contact us.
And we want to thank everyone for their help, care and concern for this wonderful animal!
